Course Description
Français 1 :
Introductory French lays the foundation for students to be effective language learners. In this course, students will learn basic structures, patterns and vocabulary in an appropriate cultural context. Basic language skills including listening, speaking, reading, and writing are all emphasized.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be Prepared
Come to Class: It is not possible to succeed in this course without regular attendance. If you miss a class it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and to submit all assignments missed
Be Ready to Learn: Students are expected be in their seats when class begins.
Homework Done& On Time: Weekly homework assignments will be given, posted on the class website, and periodically collected. Copying and/or online direct translation are NOT allowed (I am concerned that you understand/attempt assignments NOT that they are done perfectly.) Late work for a unit is accepted up until the unit test for that unit. Test Study Guides are NEVER accepted late.
Supplies in Hand: Bring the following items to class every day
1. Pen/pencil & Pen of a different color (for peer-editing)
2. Colored pencils/Markers (basic colors for picture dictionary)
3. Notebook & Folder OR Binder with loose-leaf paper
4. Classroom worksheets & assignments- This replaces a textbook
5. Picture Dictionary (will be given at the beginning of school year)
2. Stay Focused.
Actively Participate: Participation in response to or using French is expected of all students. Due to the difficult nature of learning a language, chewing gum is not recommended. If it becomes an issue, the student will no longer be permitted to have it during class.
Abstain from Using Electronic Devices & Cell Phones: All devices are NOT allowed to be used, heard or seen during classroom time unless you have permission from me AND have signed a technology waiver saying you understand my rules for use of technology in the classroom. Students seen using such devices during class will be asked to put them on my desk until the end of class.
3. Be Respectful:
Listen: If someone else is talking then you should be listening. Raise your hand & wait to be called on if you have something to say.
Be kind to others & yourself: no cutting, demeaning, inappropriate remarks
4. Think Critically:
Listen for cues: Many words in French sound similar to their English equivalents
Watch for clues: actions & gestures are regularly used to improve comprehension
Think out what you already know: use what knowledge you already have to help
Take a Guess: Give it a try- you might surprise yourself! If you still don’t understand something and I move on, just ask for clarification or help!
